Upon graduation, I acquired proficiency in the use of mechanical ink pens while working at the local Air Force base, where I contributed to the development of pilot training manuals. After two years of this work, I sought further education at the Atlanta College of Art, which provided my first exposure to formal, higher-level artistic training. Upon earning my associate degree, I transitioned into the role of Art Director for the Education Division of the Fulton County Health Department. It was during this time that I encountered two accomplished illustrators who had refined their craft in California, inspiring me to recognize that my own knowledge was still quite foundational. This realization led me to make one of the most significant decisions of my career.

While maintaining full-time employment, I enrolled at a local junior college, completing my core curriculum courses during evening sessions over the span of a year. With no financial resources, no housing arrangements, and no job prospects, I made the audacious decision to resign from my position, drive from Atlanta to Pasadena, and attend the prestigious Art Center College of Design. I borrowed my mother’s credit card to fund the trip, covering expenses for gas and meals. It was at Art Center where my journey as an artist truly commenced in earnest. I was finally in my element, fully immersed in an environment that allowed me to refine my innate creative impulses into tangible, sophisticated works of art. The experience was both transformative and exhilarating, as it provided the rare opportunity to elevate raw, unrefined creativity into a professional, expressive form of beauty.

Upon graduating from Art Center, I worked in the film industry, designing title sequences for movies, before relocating to San Francisco to work at George Lucas’ renowned Industrial Light & Magic. This role provided invaluable exposure to cutting-edge visual effects and cinematic design. Subsequently, I transitioned to freelance illustration, collaborating with a diverse range of clients, including Scholastic Press for children’s books and Quaker Oil for car racing advertisements, while continuing to develop personal paintings.

I also had the privilege of teaching at the San Francisco Academy of Art, where I greatly enjoyed engaging with students and sharing my professional insights, further enriching my own practice.
